In Aklavik!

Hello Everyone!

This will be my first post of many. As the point of this blog is relate my experiences in one of the most unique regions of Canada, I anticipate having much to talk about. The basic idea of this blog is simple: I want to express what life is like for a family of five, recently relocated to northern Canada.

I look forward to sharing experiences as a family, showcasing local photographs and just day to day life.

Mahsi cho! (This is Gwich’in for “thank you”)

I hope in time I will learn to speak more. Gwich’in is the language most spoken language in the Canadian North.

Big Decisions

Ryan and I had been planning to work up-north ever since we were dating. It was something we had always desired to do together. We always thought it would be when we were younger, but here we are, 3 kids later and are now making that dream a reality.

Ryan had been applying for jobs most of the summer. He even got a couple offers that we turned down for one reason or another. Once the school year started we decided that if we did this, that we would just start with a partial year. There are always job openings that pop up throughout the year. Teachers who go on maternity leave, a death in the family, an illness, or whatever reason. We thought, maybe after Christmas, or after Easter. We had no idea that there would be a job posting mid-Sept. Ryan applied and hadn’t gotten a response in almost a week. They ended up calling on a Tuesday and the interview was Tuesday after school. Immediately after Ryan walked in the door the phone rang and he had a very short phone interview. They called a few days later and – they offered him a job!

They needed him right away, so within a week we had moved over 80% of our things into a storage locker, packed his bags and he was on a plane on Sunday, October 8th.

Moves

Ryan and I were recently discussing how busy life has been. And not just busy, but continuously busy for the last 6+ months. We moved down the street in August and barely had time to unpack, went to NS in July, packing/unpacking for the rest of summer, then in Sept. Ryan gets hired to work up north. Then we had to re-pack, send most of our stuff into a storage locker.

Lived without Ryan for 6 weeks
Sick children, wounded child
Ryan moved in Oct.
I packed up more, moved the kids in Nov.
Unpacked in Aklavik, NWT

Now…it’s almost Dec. and we’re waiting for the moving truck to arrive. We are very excited about our things arriving just in time to decorate for Christmas. We will unpack those boxes then were DONE!!!

I’m not complaining, taking note of how busy things have been for such an extended period of time. We calculated that this was our 13th move since being married!

Life hasn’t been boring that’s for sure. I wouldn’t have it any other way since it brought us to where we are now. I suppose all this chaos is why my blog has been neglected for the last two months. I hope to change that in the days to come and blog more often. It will be fun blogging about life here.

Lots more pictures to come!

I hope to re-vamp my blog soon with a header that is a little more suitable lol.

Soccer Team

.

This post is a bit too late. But I wanted to catch up a bit, before I start posting on more current things.

Jacob joined in his very first competitive sports this past June.  He started out being a little tentative, and hesitant, but by the second day he wasn’t holding back at all and was there for every play. He occationally loved being in goaly as well. It was a great experience. For only $20 we got the entire season, the jersey, a closing ceremony bbq with chips/pop/hotdogs/revellos and much more. They also randomly selected names for Nike soccer balls and Jacob’s name was picked!

His practices and were every Monday and Wednesday.   It is a great sport for kids to play. It requires little equipment, and the focus is on having fun, teamwork, developing skills and having a healthy, active lifestyle.
